Worms and My Dog

Worms are one of the most common causes of canine heath issues

No matter how hard I try to unimagined this, it is a reality every dog owner needs to face as worms are one of the most common causes of canine heath issues. These parasites feed off your dog and sometimes there will be clues to their presence.

Yet there are more wily wicked worms that can stay undetected for some time. Only after your dog has gotten significantly ill and is displaying severe symptoms are these dangerous invaders discovered.

Diefferent Kinds of Worms

There are 5 kinds of worms that can pester your pooch. These are only the main ones. There are other parasites that can plague your pooch so brace yourself for some real bad news – some of these nasties can infect you too if you are not careful! This is truly what the stuff that nightmares are made of.

Roundworms

This is the visage of my nightmare: The fully grown roundworm really does have 3 lips around its gaping mouth. It chows down on food that has not yet digested fully inside your pet’s guts stealing precious nutrients for him/her. There are many variations of this particular worm.

Roundworms

They can be passed on to puppies if the mother had them when she was expecting or is still nursing. Even if she has been cured, your puppy is not safe and is very likely to be invaded by worms. Believe it or not but the possibility of your puppy being infected by this worm or any of the others is shockingly high.

Your dog could also get infected if he/she digests their eggs when eating off the ground or grooming.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms

Their name is derived from their long, flat appearances and they can grow up to 2 foot long. This gruesome fiend hooks onto the inside of the intestine and stays put with the additional support of sucker on its head.

If that is not enough gross enough, this thing has no mouth and absorbs what it needs through its skin! Your pooch can get these by swallowing a flea that may have eaten a tapeworm egg!

Hookworms

Hookworms

Again, it is called for what it looks like. Hookworms latch onto the intestinal wall and suckle blood. Their teeth are sharp and will bite to get their fill.

If another dog has been infected and passed the eggs, your dog can get them from the ground orally or through the skin. If a momma dog is infected she can spread these vampires to her pups in her milk.

Whipworms

Whipworms

Another bloodsucker is the whipworm. It literally looks like a whip – its long elongated neck; and a whip’s handle – its short plump body. Using their super long, wiry necks, whipworms furrow into the wall of your dog’s intestine to feed.

A dog that has passed eggs in an area creates the opportunity for the next unluckily mutt coming along to get infected, just like with the tapeworm.

Heartworms

This curse does not have the home address of your canine’s guts like the others. Instead, it hangs out in his/her blood vessels, lungs, and heart. They give a new twist to Heart Break Hotel because those that do take up residency in the heart make dogs extremely sick.

Their occupancy can cause this vital organ to malfunction and blood clotting is effected as well. Small canines are high risk for fatality even if only a few of these heartbreakers move on in.

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes

Heartworms are usually only detected when it is too late. They can also not be treated with by broad spectrum dewormers and your vet will need to provide you with specialized treatment. A mosquito that has dined upon an infected animal and then decides to try your dog for taste will pass the heartworm on.

What Should I Consider When Choosing the Best Dog Dewormer?

For puppies, it is recommended that you deworm them from as early as 2 to 3 weeks of age to clean any parasites that may have been passed on by their mother.

If you don’t treat newborn puppies, they will develop infection even if mom has no worms. In fact, the puppies will be more likely to infect her! Older dogs can be dewormed regularly every month more or less depending on the dog dewormer specification.

Size

The weight of your dog will determine the dosage required.

Health Restrictions

Your best friend’s health is not to be played with so make sure that you carefully read the manufacturer’s health restrictions. This may include pregnancy, existing worms or other health problems and medications.

Many dog dewormers are a cure and a precaution but if your furry friend remains sick, it is best to go directly to the doggy doctor.

Type of Dewormer

As you will be administrating the treatments, look at the type of dewormer. Some are liquid that can be easily swallowed while others are granules or powder that must be mixed into food.

Generally, most dog owners find it quite a struggle to get their pets to swallow pills. You will need to cleverly disguise them in something delicious so that your dog is none the wiser or use a pill dropper.

You must bear in mind as well that there are different strains of the main worm groups. Dewormers can only eliminate a few of them, not all of them. Again, seeking professional advice is best.

Conclusion

The thought of these nightmare creatures is really enough to keep me awake at night. The best dog dewormer is crucial to me. Obviously, the broadband spectrum ones that can deal with more of these worms are ideal but I found the type the most influential in my final decision. Pills are always a problem whether they are dewormers or vitamins. Even if I hide them inside a meatball, my dog spits them out. She is also a fussy eater and noticed when I mixed the 8-in-1 Safe Guard granules or the powered Panacur into her meals.

However, I had no problems with either the Sentry HC WormX Plus Deworming Chewy tablets or the liquid Nemex-2. Both are yummy to her as the flavor is the spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down without any effort from my side. This is definitely the most important point in naming the best dog dewormers in my books.
